It brings my heart such joy when I see and hear my drums being played in ceremonies.
Joan began making drums in August, 1997. Joan’s drums are custom made with bleached cow hide; the rims are made with maple wood. The drum sticks are made with white pine wood and are hand-sewn with soft cow hide.
Joan has made drums for many Aboriginal artists and singers who use them for ceremonial and spiritual purposes; she has also made drums for various art galleries in Canada and the United States.
Joan participates in potlatch ceremonies and has been initiated as a Ghost Dancer. She has become aware of the importance of being a drum-maker in relation to the potlatch ceremony.
The drum, it is the center, it is the heartbeat of the people, of Mother Earth.
